ON LOOK FILMS BENEFIT WEEKEND
International Artists Team Up to Document 1400 Years of Human History

On Look Films is holding a Benefit Weekend to raise funds for the making of their film,
Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo, a documentary film project, comprehensive archiving
endeavor and art installation about the 1400 year old tradition of the call to prayer that will
be erased forever from the audioscape of Cairo by 2010. This weekend will be filled with live
Balkan, classical, and experimental music, as well as independent films, an art exhibition and
auction, a raffle, and of course great beer! Events will take place at Chicago landmarks such
as the SmallBar, Elastic Arts Foundation, and The Shire Public House.

Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo is inspired by the travels and observations of artist
Anna Kipervaser. As Executive Producer for On Look Films and Voices and Faces of the
Adhan: Cairo
, Ms. Kipervaser has put together a dedicated and culturally diverse team
of professionals who have over 30 years’ combined experience in filmmaking to join her
in realizing this vision on film. Two of the group were born in the former Soviet Union,
one in Brazil, another Iran, and another in Israel; the team’s internationality is a reflection
of their commitment to intercultural dialogue and understanding, with the goal of
transcending cultural barriers.

Although the tradition of the adhan dates back to the seventh century, previous recordings
are limited and contain no pertinent information for future generations, which is often the
case with oral traditions. In 2010, the adhan will be reduced to a single recording of one
muezzin reciting the adhan and then broadcast throughout the city using wireless receivers.
As the Tawheed Al Adhan spreads through Egypt and the Arab world, it will lead not only
to the end of the fourteen-hundred year old tradition of the adhan, but also to unemployment
of the muezzins themselves. The loss of the individualized adhan affects not only the spiritual
soundscape of Cairo, but also the economic make-up of the city as well. These muezzins,
historically undocumented, will disappear into the general population of Cairo and will be
almost impossible to trace. It is necessary to document and honor this tradition before it
ceases to exist.

Before this art form is irrevocably lost, Voices and Faces of the Adhan: Cairo seeks to
preserve the experience of the adhan in this generation, perhaps the last to experience the
Cairene muezzins’ unique and ancient symphony.

On Look Films is excited to host this Benefit Weekend in conjunction with the Chicago
Arabesque festival and Taste of Chicago, making it an even more culturally valuable summer
weekend in Chicago.
