Saturday 3/1/08 - 9:00PM doors/10:00PM start Elastic Arts and Harold Washington Commemorative Year present: Brother Phil Cohran and Prophecy Living Legends Tribute Kelan Phil Cohran was born in Oxford, Mississippi on May 8, 1927. He is a jazz musician, musicologist, composer, instrument designer, holistic health advocate, and community activist. He is known most for his Afro-Arts Theater, Artistic Heritage Ensemble, trumpet contributions in the Sun Ra Arkestra in Chicago (1959-1961), and as one of the cofounders of the AACM. "Kelan Phil Cohran (KPC) is a "sphereologist". He coined the phrase to describe his lifework which explores the harmonies of all matter. This harmony is manifested in many forms of the Creation such as stars and planets. Music is the one tool that brother Kelan has used to explore the Creation and to reinforce its beauty, power, and spiritual joy. He sums it up best in the following statement. African people have been involved in singing and playing instruments since the entire span of their known existence (at least 4 million years). Many of the problems living together were solved over generations thru the language of song. All of the art forms of antiquity were part of harmonic life (singing, dancing, painting, and sculpting). Today we have music in abundance that lacks purpose. We lost the respect and the power of our ancestors in these spiritual sciences. As a result instead of benefiting from proper use of art we self-destruct as toxicities from harmful thoughts, sounds, and images contaminate the mind with negative energies. It is time for enlightened artists to step forward to share their light. He hopes to use the influence he has on the artistic community to stimulate creativity in the same bed as mortality and purpose. The energy in todays world demands a voice of reason, consultation, a voice of vision, a voice of concern. It is the responsibility of all of us to reshape the world we live in according to the cosmic order captured in music, art, and culture. Cosmic order is in everything from the smallest discernable cell to the vastness of the universe. philcohran.com/ myspace.com/kelanzulu www.hwcy.org/ Thursday 3/6/08 - 10:00PM improvised music series Kimmel/Hatwich/Hess/Riordan Jeff Kimmel - bass clarinet, Anton Hatwich - bass, Steve Hess - drums/electronics, Marc Riordan - drums Nick Broste Quartet Nick Broste - trombone, Kevin Davis - cello, Jaimie Branch - trumpet, Marc Riordan - drums Friday 3/7/08 - 9:00PM Elastic HipHop Series The Urban Sandbox Jared Paul (Strange Famous Records) Marc "So What!" Who is E.B.B. & F.L.O.W.? ebb /eb/ - n. movement of the tide out to sea, recede. flow /flo/- v. 1.) glide along as a stream. 2.) circulate. 3.) flow smoothly or steadily. The hip-hop duo E.B.B. & F.L.O.W. characterizes the revitalization of early hip-hop elements during a time when many have said hip-hop is dying. As artists E.B.B. & F.L.O.W. have been able to remain commercially relevant while being musically innovative, a fact that sets them apart from any other group in the industry today. E.B.B. & F.L.O.W. started from humble beginnings in a small production studio in Boston, MA where a burgeoning producer and a hungry emcee came together to essentially create one record. After the record (Good Times) was complete, the streets responded with a cry for more, and it quickly became evident that there was something special in the making. From that point, E.B.B. & F.L.O.W. had one goal in mind - to make Every Beat Bang and finish each song with the Fresh(est) Lyrics On Wax using the examples set by hip-hop superstars like Reflection Eternal (Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli), DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, and The Kidz Down the Hall. The name E.B.B. & F.L.O.W. was chosen not only for the powerful acronym it represents but also to characterize their work ethic and drive. Hip hop in its essence is full or hard kicks drums, snapping snares, educated lyrics, political topics, witty musings, and mesmerizing melodies, and E.B.B. & F.L.O.W. music captures all of these things, as they smoothly and steadily move fans back into the golden era of hip-hop music. E.B.B. & F.L.O.W. is comprised of producer DeMo (Jin, Special Teamz, M. Diesel, and Wordsmith), a Boston, MA native whose production style is refreshingly authentic, innovative, and versatile. DeMo will stand on the frontline of the music revolution for years to come. To the right of DeMo, stands the prolific emcee Inf. (PyInfamous of The Threat).
