Nuestro Tambo
Ruben Gerena (Co-Director), Angel M Fuentes (Co-Director), Johnny Tirado, Lizette Torres, Roberto Perez, Melanie Maldonado, Saul Melendez, Jose Natal
Nuestro Tambo, a Chicago-based group that celebrates the AfroPuerto Rican traditions of Plena and Bomba... This group is unique in that it represents Bomba as a living musical form rather than a folkloric tradition. Nuestro Tambo is comprised of twenty-something and thirty-something men and women who have committed themselves to the promotion and celebration of these genres. They compose original songs, incorporate their urban experience through the usage of elements such as rap and easily interchange instruments, microphones and dance space with one another, as all of the members are interdisciplinary artists. Nuestro Tambo has departed from what has become accepted as the traditional representation of Bomba music and has made this music more accessible to young urban dwellers more often drawn to the commercialized forms of Salsa, Hip Hop and Reggaeton. This group was the first AfroPuerto Rican music group to have a weekly contract at a nightspot, helped inaugurate the City of Chicagos Millennium Park and has partnered with other music aficionados to create AGUZATE a cohort that is dedicated to the production of AfroLatino events. As a contributing member of AGUZATE, Nuestro Tambo helped produce, sponsor and perform in the first Tribute to the Sonero (the Spanish word for improvisational singer.) This group makes a necessary contribution to gamut of Latino music in Chicago. Unlike many other local groups, they are able to fuse traditional music with the contemporary urban experience. This is evidenced by one of their most notable Plenas La Bandera (Written by Ramon Lopez) a song about the citys historic Puerto Rican enclave in Humboldt Park.

Doug Lofstrom and the New Quartet
Doug Lofstrom - bass, compositions, James Sanders - violin, Michael Levin - reeds, Leandro Lopez-Varady - piano, Sarah Allen- drums
The New Quartet presents classical, jazz and world music in a chamber music setting, and features some of the Chicago area's best and most versatile musicians. Featured with the New Quartet is violinist James Sanders. Sanders, who also leads his own Latin-jazz orchestra, Conjunto, is an active chamber and orchestral musician who regularly performs with the Ravinia Festival Orchestra and the Chicago Sinfonietta. Multi-reedist Michael Levin has performed with artists as diverse as Diane Schuur, Clark Terry, the Temptations and the Revolution Ensemble. Pianist Leandro Lopez-Varady, originally from Argentina, settled in Chicago after touring the Far East with jazzman Eldee Young. Rounding out the group is Sarah Allen, renowned jazz drummer and percussionist with the Northbrook Symphony.
Composer and bassist Doug Lofstrom, formerly composer-in-residence for the Metropolis
Symphony Orchestra and musical director of Chicago's Free Street Theater, has composed and arranged a wealth of stunning orchestral and chamber music. His works have been performed by the St. Louis, Atlanta, and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras, and the Present Music, Tales & Scales and Revolution chamber ensembles, among other groups. He is currently on the faculty of Chicago's Columbia College.
Deliberately eclectic, the group’s repertoire juxtaposes chamber music of Bartok and Debussy with early classics by Duke Ellington, tangos by Astor Piazzolla and Lofstrom’s original music and arrangements of traditional music from around the world. Doug Lofstrom has long dreamed of presenting the music he loved - without artificial boundaries. The embodiment of that dream is the New Quartet.
