SERIES
In addition to a host of weekly shows, EAF curates several performance
series throughout the month at ELASTIC.
Elastic Hip-Hop Series
The Elastic Hip-Hop Series, curated by EAF cofounder Sam
Lewis, was created to provide “underground” local, regional,
national & international hip-hop artists a quality venue in which
to perform in the Chicago area. While there are many local venues
that provide hip-hop programming during the week, we found that
many venues don’t usually program hip-hop on weekends for various
reasons. Elastic fills that void by programming primarily on the
weekends, attracting a multi-cultural, multi-gender crowd of various
socio-economic backgrounds. We also record every show, and give
it to the performers, free of charge. We hope this gesture will
inspire the artists to attempt greater self-promotion and also assist
them with self-critique and fine-tuning of their craft.
Since March 2006, Elastic Arts has produced over 40 hip-hop shows
that have featured artists from: Chicago, DeKalb, Rockford, Minneapolis,
Saint Louis, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, Texas & Seattle.
Our goals for the future include:
Creating an annual “Elastic Hip-Hop” Festival
Releasing a live CD of “Elastic Hip-Hop Series” performances
Gaining greater media exposure for the local “underground” hip-hop
scene
Building a greater community with other Organizations/Venues, locally
and nationally, that provides similar programming, in order for
artists to have a “circuit” of venues where they will be able to
perform and build a larger following.

Elastro
Launched in November 2003 by musician and EAF co-founder Paul
Giallorenzo, Elastro is an ongoing monthly electro/acoustic
music series showcasing local, national, and international musicians.
In particular, there is an emphasis toward presenting electro/acoustic
music that is produced live in a transparent process, such that
is it both sonically stimulating and visually performative; we encourage
performances that engage the audience with live sound creation utilizing
crossover between digital, electro-mechanical, and real-time acoustic-processing
realms.
Artists include: Fred Lonberg-Holm, TV Pow, Koutaro Fukui, Eric
Leonardson, Aram Shelton, as well as Alan Licht (NYC), Greg Davis
(VT), and Keith Fullerton Whitman (MA). International artists have
included New Zealands Birchville Cat Motel and The
Frankfurt School, from Toronto.
Triage Sound Series
The Triage monthly series at Elastic provides an opportunity to
hear new and established experimental music performers from the
Chicago area and around the globe in an intimate, focused setting.
No area of the sound palette goes unexplored: electro acoustic experimentation,
harsh noise, field recordings, and dense drones are only the beginnings.
Recent performers include Michael Graeve, Grey Ghost, Blastocyst,
Bloodyminded, and Eric Leonardson with Carol Genetti.
The series is curated by Triage (B. Edwards, B. Labycz, and V. Sprikut),
lands on the third Tuesday of each month.
Improvised Music Series
The Thursday night improvised music series, begun at 3030
and continuing at Elastic, has become an important part
of the thriving jazz and improvised music scene in Chicago. Curated
by saxophonist Dave
Rempis, the series began in April of 2002 and has featured
over 80 concerts by local and international artists including
Joe McPhee, Peter Brotzmann, Hamid Drake, Ken Vandermark, Chris
Speed, Drew Gress, John Hollenbeck, Steve Swell, Malcolm Goldstein,
Rob Mazurek, Alan Licht, Kevin Drumm, Paul Lytton, Axel Doerner,
Joe Morris, Jeff Parker, Carlos Zingaro, Kent Kessler, Michael
Zerang, Jim Baker, and Fred Lonberg-Holm. in addition, 3030 has
become a testing ground for the development of a newer generation
of Chicago improvisers including Tim Daisy, Aram Shelton, Jason
Roebke, Frank Rosaly, Keefe Jackson, Brian Dibblee, Jason Ajemian,
Josh Berman, and many others. The weekly series has also culminated
into 2 Elastic Festivals, a three night festival which highlighted
many of the best working groups springing up in Chicago.
